Nostalgic for the Golden Age of hip hop? Well the new school is giving you just that.
Right when you thought that the A$AP Mob collective was all about moving upwards and onwards, sonically evolving hip hop music further and further away from its roots, A$AP Nast hits us with the video for Trillmatic featuring none other than Method Man.
This past summer, Trillmatic was released in a joint music video with A$AP Ant as his track The Way It Go took centre stage. I mentioned how I wished Nast’s feature was much longer because of his true-to-form New York rhyming style and it only took him about half a year to produce the video for the complete track, but it was well worth the wait. The co-sign from Meth only further enforces this. Back in the 90s, the Wu-Tang Clan was the most well known and revered rap collective and I definitely feel like they were influential in the formation of the A$AP Mob. Now, the Mob may have different principles, goals and way of executing plans but nothing makes me happier than seeing an OG King of New York with the Come-Up Kings, together. New York hip hop is most certainly experiencing yet another renaissance.
Shot somewhere in a high rise in the Bronx, Nast raps alongside A$AP members Twelvy and Illz in the building hallways and outside on his flip phone. Later on he’s in a pool hall with Meth before taking the New York streets. You can also catch appearances from A$AP Rocky, A$AP Bari, Ian Connor and Lou Banga. If this video and track doesn’t evoke the soul of the Empire State in the 90s, I don’t know what does.
