Another week, another 5 of Rap Genius’ dope lines from over the past week. We can dig it!
5. “Love us or not, the Mark Zuckerbergs of the block/Hug your knot, staying rich, we was built for the guap” — Raekwon, ‘The Morning’ lyrics
In this line, we see Wu legend Raekwon compare himself to Facebook owner and multimillionaire Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Zuckerberg’s reputation polarises people as many respect his hustle and his seemingly humble lifestyle, The Social Network movie throws shade on his career. The ‘knots’ referred to are those huge bundles of green notes we’re used to seeing rappers carrying around in their pockets. Raekwon managed to steal one of the hottest lyrics of the week despite the fact that he was a guest. Take him as he is or not… Raekwon couldn’t give two ****’s…
4. “It’s the Dream Team meets the Supreme Team/And all our eyes green” — Jay-Z, ‘Clique’ lyrics
This did have to be explained to me as I am from the UK. The Dream Team is the ’92 U.S. Olympic basketball team (even I knew that one). The Supreme Team was the notorious Queens-based drug gang of the 1980’s and 90’s (that… I didn’t know). Although the green eyes mentioned are pertaining to the colour of money and the infamous ‘green eyed monster’ (jealousy), the Supreme Team’s leader, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff (Majestic in 50 Cent’s movie Get Rich or Die Tryin was based on McGriff), famously had green eyes. A lil’ history lesson for those who didn’t know.
3. “I ain’t your ordinary — I’m that ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb/Hate femcees, could give a fuck if we get along” — Rah Digga, ‘Janis Joplin’ lyrics
This is probably MY favourite line of the week. There have been a lot of male rappers claiming they hate female rappers, proving that inequality is well and truly alive in hip hop in 2012. In this lyric, Rah Digga owns the controversial ‘femcee’ label and throws haters the middle finger! Rah Digga isn’t one to shy away from controversy. She sonned Odd Future‘s Tyler The Creator on a track after he threw shots. Rah is not one to play with. The ‘Cherry Bomb’ reference is taken from The Runaways’ 1976 classic “Cherry Bomb“
2. “So while you balling at the Plaza/Kids two and three die every day out in Gaza/Civil wars in Cairo, and the buildings burn like pyro/In Jerusalem, the Mus-a-lims are fighting for survival” — Mistah F.A.B., ‘What’s Swear 2 God To An Atheist’ lyrics
It seems I’m not the only one sick and tired of all the materialistic posing, when there are far more pressing matters going on in the world. Mistah F.A.B kicking some knowledge and highlighting the recent atrocities against Palestinians in Jerusalem. A lot of rappers spend all their time rapping about cars, clothes, money and heauxs… Mistah F.A.B puts in all into perspective.
1. “It’s Young Money, we out here, we turnt up ’bout that life/My pockets fat like Jack Black; if I go broke, I’mma jack whites” — Lil Wayne, ‘Magic’ lyrics
Taken from his new mixtape Dedication 4. “Magic” features rapper Flo and sees YMCMB leader Weezy back on form. I’ve been hearing so many people state that they are not feeling the ‘sober’ Weezy… Trips me out that people can say they’d prefer to see their favourite rappers walking around in a zombiefied syrup stupor. Well, he’s off the syrup and his metaphors are still crazy here. In this line he plays with the name of former White Stripes guitarist and singer Jack White as well as that white powder. *Another interpretation of this line pointed out to me was that it could mean white people too… can we say that? I guess I just did!*
