When I heard the new title Bath Salt that was slated to be released by the A$AP Mob collective, I knew they were staying current by referencing the horrific events that occurred in Miami, but I didn’t quite know what to expect from the lyrical content. Meech and Juice, from the Flatbush Zombies really impressed me with the way they spit at the beginning of this track. I’m definitely getting a sense of dare I say it…Ol’ Dirty Bastard? The rough, gruff vocal tone is definitely refreshing from the lean induced I-don’t-give-a-f*ck comatose sounding voices (who shall remain nameless) I’ve heard in recent time. Even Rocky who’s known to rhyme more slowly and definitively speeds up the pace. The beat has this eerie Hitchcock meets 40′s prohibition bar era meets new age trilla sound. The Flatbush Zombies definitely have a new fan and I’ll certainly been looking into their music. Its about time horrorcore a la Gravediggaz made a come back. It fits perfectly as the background music to the ambivalent and bleak mood of the times projected by Gen Y/Z.
