Stands as if in “AA” meeting and states, “my name is Megan, yes Im from Nashville and no I don’t listen to country music”
I know, I know, but tis true and there is more to our “music city” than country…so much more.
Born and raised in Nashville,TN, when I tell people my favorite emcee is Big L, I get “that look”…the look that I am an implant form the Northeast sent to destroy the south and anyone associated with the phrase “brr”!
Truth be told, jazzy beats and mind boggling lyrical content comprise my forte, but don’t get it twisted, I bob to the 808 and triple six is a mainstay to this day in my IPOD (my family IS from Memphis).
Luckily, Nashville has it all. If you think about it, we are directly in the middle of all the great music (I like west coast too so don’t get all mad! Everyone knows “It was a Good Day” by Ice Cube is that one), but I mainly listen to East Coast hip-hop mixed with a little trap. I know it seems questionable, but mainly what I bump these days are local artists and have quite a few to choose from.
To ease the shock of this information overload I am just going to give you a broad brush of what resides here in Cashville Tennakey (that’s what we call it down in these parts!)
First up, my young lyrical protégé, Mac L This cat is going places. Mac L is an old dude in a young body. Focused on cultural issues and mind expansion he is a lyrical giant. With a voice that resonates in a 1-900 type a way over beats that Preemo would be happy to vibe out to…def a dude to watch on the rise. Mac doesn’t come in until the second verse on this one; honorable mention to “Tin Fiasco” on the first.
Next, the soothing sounds of Elevation. This guy is a triple threat; emcee, producer and one of THE MOST positive cats. You know that saying “when you smile, the whole world smiles with you”, he’s got one of those! His beats are reminiscent of the late great Dilla and lyrically on point. This is a personal favorite.
Hopping over to the “Cashville Ambassador” and our very own Biggie Smalls, we have Top Notch. This guy is all over the place! Rapper, writer, actor, DJ…there really isn’t anything this guy can’t do. He has been putting in work in this town for a good minute. Since the days of Kool Daddy Fresh (you remember Fresh dontcha!?), he’s been in the clinch and as the song states, he does it all “for his people
So as to not forget where we are, a little taste of the dirty dirty…
Starting off with the homie YDotGPeriod. He has really been putting in the hours and this song with FlipG has become a personal anthem. Because I am indeed, from the ten…
Last but not least…
Bezzeled Gang!! I gotta admit..I luh this ish! Bang..Bang…Bang..and over the Master P of yesteryear. Directed by none other than Cashvilles own Charles Robinson. We on the map ya’ll!! BANG!
