Although this documentary came out in 2009, I only recently discovered it…and I’m glad I did.
“Say My Name” is a gritty, candid look at what it means to be a female emcee in hip hop’s current climate. From hip hop’s birthplace in the Bronx to the UK and several points in between, director Nirit Peled follows a host of emcees and gets their take on everything from lyricism to violence to motherhood. The documentary follows new talent along with some of the genre’s pioneers, and everyone who watches will learn at least one thing they didn’t know before. Expect appearances from Rah Digga, Roxanne Shante, Monie Love, MC Lyte, Estelle, Erykah Badu and Jean Grae to name a few. The DVD is a rare find, but with some digging, can be found at your local library. Peep the trailer below:
